Analysis- tutorial with Maiko

1. Issues/subjects to be discussed:

How can I develop the sound sculpture for the summer show.

Is that necessary to make lager size?

2. Issues/subjects discussed:

Why should I try the larger speaker even I have a plan to assemble small elements together?

Maiko's answer is that to understand the materials especially clay. Clay has different characteristics in different size.

Recognizable shape or abstract shape ----- it’s unnecessary to identify different sounds shape. For example, if I use scream and human body to translate a sense of fear, that’s the shape of fear, not the shape of sound.

To think about what will the sculpture looks like. I can not control the shape of each pieces (that depend the sound vibration), but I can chose the way to put them together.

3. Actions to be taken on the next stage:

Making the larger size (at least half 50cm diameter) in 4 days-----2D to 3D

Trying closed 3D shape by using solid porcelain instead of slip casting in 4 days.

Research more sculpture art to think about different way of assembling.

mind map about this tutorial:

Aim: translate the sound

1 sound: nature of sound

vibrations: audible sound/ travel direction?

2 shape: start from 3D? abstract? specific and recognizable shape?

create a group using similar way?

types of sculpture? chose the way how to join them together

subtal area: don't need confirm from other people

3 sound area: 250HZ~ 400HZ daily life, 60HZ~500HZ , 20HZ~2000HZ. not just human's sound, maybe something you can't see but you can hear. to let people think something differently.

4 divers: speaker (more flexible surface), vibration generator can create more specific sound frequency

5 individual piece: it's unnecessary to show the difference between different sound especially clay.

6 understand the materials: water, wax, resin, clay ,slip and water color, think about the visual affect and the way to translate.

7 scale : try the large scale, to see more sculpture. human body is too common.
